In Sri Lanka it was believed  that  some illnesses were brought on humans by demons and these beliefs and rituals that cure them could have gone back to prehistoric period.

According to the belief in Sri Lanka there are eighteen demons or sanni yakku (deamons) are responsible for different diseases, which can be cured by performing an exorcism. During this ritual calls the demons who are thought to affect the patient, then told not to trouble humans and banished.

The Sanni Yakuma ritual summons these demons and banishes them back to the demon world after bringing them under control. The rituals had been performed in the southern and western parts of the country since ancient times.
