This traditional mask is hand painted with bright beautiful matt colours such as blue, green, white, black, red and yellow. It has a ferocious face with bulging, popping & staring eyes, lolling tongue out of a wide mouth armed to the hilt with set of fanged teeth, all topped by a beautifully featured peacock crown hood.
This mask represents three beautifully featured peacocks one on its crown and other two on sides (ears).
It is believed that this mask bring peace, harmony and wealth to house or business while ward off evil spirit and ghosts. This mask often used in Sri Lankan household as a wall decor and often used by Sri Lankan dances in stage drama. ( “kolam” dance ).

These masks are carved from kaduru wood which is soft wood and can carve to any shape. ”Kaduru” wood believed to have mystical powers.
There are 24 forms of Raksha masks and have different meanings.Among them Peacock mask is mostly use due to its beautiful colours and shape.These masks are used to perform dances called "kolam dance" and to perform as a tribute to the strong and powerful Race called “Raksha” the Original Sri Lankans, during the time of famous king “Ravana”.
Also this mask is used by Yakadura (Traditional Dancer) to ward off evil spirit from special ritual perfom to cure mentally sick villagers.
