There are 24 forms of Raksha masks and have different meanings.Among them Peacock mask is mostly use due to its beautiful colours and shape.
The Bright beautiful colours such as green,blue ,black ,white are used in this mask. This mask represent three beautifully feathered peacocks.Two peacocks on the sides as the ears and top another peacock as the crown.the sharp long teeth and tong of face draw your attention to face and belived ward off evil and .
Presently, in Sri Lanka, this mask is widely used by Sri Lankan cultural dancers in “Kolam maduwa”. These dances are perform as a tribute to the strong and powerful Race called “Raksha” the Original Sri Lankans, during the time of Famous King “Ravana”.
Also this mask is used by Yakadura (Traditional Dancer) to ward off evil spirit from special ritual perfom to cure mentally sick villagers. Also used as a ornament at the entrances of houses and building under construction to ward off bad thoughts.
